TADAsana/Yoga & Love is an US 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, tasked with providing non-commercial yoga, mindfulness, and healthy lifestyle education. We provide this education primarily but not exclusively to youth, particularly in traditionally undeserved communities. Funded by private donations, we partner with a number of other organizations, as well as with agencies of the local, state and federal governments.
In 2019, after 2 years of trying and delays (due to yoga in schools being illegal in Alabama), the State of Alabama approved the creation of a “Yoga & Love” Distinctive License Plate Category to fund yoga, mindfulness, and healthy lifestyle education.
Through 2019 and 2020, we worked with Rep. Jeremy Gray and other members of the legislature and state government to remove the school yoga ban. This measure passed the house and was on its way to becoming law when the COVID-19 Pandemic forced the adjournment of the legislative session of 2020 for all but the most important budgetary matters.
Rep. Margie Wilcox, chair of the Legislative Oversight Committee on License Plates, extended the deadline to have 1000 preorders for the plate, which is where we are now. The full funds needed to pay for them has been donated, and will be used to ensure the plate is created and available at your local DMV.
In 2021, we will be filming the first season of our Multimedia School Yoga Program in the State Legislature, where it will follow a yoga club of inner city youth as they #BeTheChange they wish to see in the world, by showing kids how to effect change, have the government listen to them and consider their concerns, and legalize yoga in schools. This series will also include yoga and mindfulness lessons taught by students and government officials.
As of September 2020, the Yoga & Love Personalized License Plates number of pre-commitments has been fulfilled!
The new Alabama Yoga License Plates will be available for purchase at your local DMV’s in the middle of September 2020.
